A local organization needed a tool to collect feedback from participants in FIRST LEGO League, a robotics program for elementary and middle schoolers. In partnership with the organization staff, I designed, produced, and tested a survey activity to collect student responses via sticky note pixel art.
This project was developed as my senior capstone for the Technical Writing & Communication B.S. program at the University of Minnesota.
Concept & Development
As I brainstormed ideas, I researched topics like interaction design, game design, and survey respondent biases. I used the research to guide my exploration and evaluate each idea.
The final concept was inspired by two things: sticky note pixel art, and paint-by-numbers.
Respondents answer the survey questions by writing on color-coded sticky notes and adding them to the collective template. Over the course of the event, the template fills up and becomes a huge pixel art piece.

Pixel art template. As people use sticky notes to respond to the survey, the image fills with color and a LEGO minifigure appears.
